MusiChick’s Featured Artist Niia
As a producer it’s my job to look into the most underrated artists in existence. I enjoy finding songs that no one has ever heard and give them the impression I have an awesome taste in music. Today, MusiChicks is giving a huge shootout to Niia Bertino, better known by her stage name Niia. You may recognize her from the 2009 single by Wyclef Jean “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)”. I have been following Niia for the past few years now and 2014 will be her breakout year. Trust me, its the internet and everything you read on here is correct. Niia is the perfect mix of The Weeknd and Adele. Curious yet? Niia has a dark rich intelligent pop jazz electronic blend, something you could expect from the 26 year old jazz trained pianist/vocalist/New-Adele. How bad ass is she? I’m glad you asked. She got Tony Kaye to take the time out of his busy schedule (of directing movies) to direct her debut music video by calling his office everyday until someone accidentally told her his home address. Then she went to his house, knocked on his door, and asked him and he agreed because he knew it would be a good project. Bad ass or creepy? Trust me on this, a little bit of both especially once you watch the Made For You Music Video. I think there is a lesson to be learned here too. Real Artists, no matter how big or small, will respect, enjoy, and never turn down a good project. You can convince an artist to do literally anything if you design a good enough project around it. James Jebbia (founder Supreme) even said that was his greatest selling point to scoring some of his biggest collaborations with the likes of Damien Hirst, Kermit the Frog, Lady Gaga, and Mike Tyson. Niia’s debut album is expected to release sometime in 2013. Literally sometime, no one knows, not even Niia. Maybe my fascination with Niia is that she dropped out of The New School for Music as a Jazz vocal major, just like me, John Mayer, and Kanye West also dropped out of our respected colleges. I’m just saying you can’t deny there’s a trend here. I guess if you have something and you know you do, then there’s no need for college. They knew they had music, and I knew I had blogging. So we dropped out, maybe at separate times, but together in spirit.
Here’s a short list of my favorite Niia songs. Click to listen:
